Loans from China Still Welcome, Hun Sen Says
The Chinese government is considering loaning an unspecified amount of money to cover the cost of constructing 20 new national roads, Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday. Speaking at the inauguration of 128-km stretch of National Road 62 linking Kampong Thom and Preah Vihear provinces, also primarily funded by a Chinese loan, Mr. Hun Sen detailed a number of upcoming infrastructure projects likely to be paid in part with Beijing’s money. Chief among them is a planned 3,500-meter bridge that will span the Tonle San river and connect Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom. … But after taking the time to explain the projects, Mr. Hun San warned that such works might not be completed should he not win re-election. … Critics have routinely blasted the ruling party for a perceived eagerness to accept Chinese loans, which often carry higher interest rates than those from other donors. …
